Ellen Von Unwerth

Ellen Von Unwerth is such an interesting photographer to me. She by no means just photographs female subjects, but when she does, she has this undeniable oeuvre. Obviously they are constructed with the woman as sexual icon, but the seeming 'availabilty' of the subjects is interesting as its another instance of 'women constructing themselves for the male gaze' - a long standing art debate when looking at photographs of women.
Beautiful work. I would love to read some of Von Unwerth's interviews to gain some insight into her rhetoric.

Cecil Beaton

"Charles James Evening Dresses" New York, 1948

How beautiful. The picture of the 'Charles James Evening Dresses' is one of Beaton's most iconic photographs...
Known for his portraiture, he helped to collapse the divide between fashion photography/portrait photography and art photography.
The favourite photographer of Audrey Hepburn. How revelatory are his shots of Marilyn??
What do you think?

Moschino Spring 2010.

I remain marginally unconvinced about the gold sandals with black stockings, but celebrate Moschino's consistent commitment to lady-like dressing. It's very celebratory, no? And the 'more is beautiful' approach to accesories is fantastic - being a woman is supposed to be fun!! Love, love- have a great day! xo

J Maskrey Body Jewels.

J Maskrey body jewels. Had my eye on these for ages as they are always on the beauty pages of Brit publications. I'm working on making my own prototype but its slow progress... mostly due to my clumsiness with my borrowed hot glue gun - I'm a little scared of it after the last batch of burns.

The week that was...

This is a celebratory post. I had the most awesome weekend with my family and friends. I spent Saturday wandering through art galleries in Bris with my Dad. So, SO lucky to have someone so open to art, he is so glad and eager to talk and actually LOOK at art with me! Its very hard to find an open soul, who is happy to engage in art without excusing themselves from what they are looking at. Contemporary art is often confronting, but to be able to share and encourage the 'art' knowledge of a parent is such a great, great experience for me. Plus - its the only time I get my Dad all to myself. What a joy!
We traipsed through a couple of galleries in the Valley (a kind of cultural hub in Brisbane - for my overseas readers) and then went to Milani Gallery in search of some works for purchase by the beautiful vernon-ah-kee....
We ended up, happily, sharing what we liked and disliked along the way... and then there was food and drinks, and my friends and how great it is to spend time laughing and crying with those I love and adore. I'm a lucky girl.
